The Rotary Club of Redmond hosted a full house meeting on November 2 to honor Redmond High School's first Students of the Month for the 2023-24 school year. Also on hand was Jessica Forsythe, Redmond City Council candidate Position 3, and Anna Carroll, Campaign Manager for the Together Center.
Jessica Forsythe shared her thoughts about her goals for Redmond as a candidate running unopposed for Redmond City Council as the warm-up for the meeting.
Next, Redmond Rotary featured its annual Students of the Month celebration for the junior and seniors chosen for that award. Teachers at Redmond High School nominate three juniors and three seniors each month during the school year for this honor. A committee of Redmond Rotarians interviews the three candidates and selects the individuals for the award. Each Rotarian who has participated in the interviews agrees that all the candidates have impressive backgrounds and achievements and making the decision is always difficult.
Students who are chosen for the achievement have their names added to a permanent plaque at Redmond High School. The students, their parents, and the nominating teachers are also guests of Redmond Rotary for lunch to receive their awards--a special engraved plaque. The teachers share why they were nominated as part of the awards ceremony.
Senior Student of the Month--Holly Tiglon

Join Redmond Rotarians for lunch on Thursday, June 1, at the Family Pancake House, 17621 Redmond Way, Redmond, WA 98052, at 12 noon to meet Rep. Amy Walen and hear her speak about taxes and tax reform. The state tasked the Tax Structure Work Group to conduct outreach across the state and all sectors of our economy to make recommendations to reform and update our tax code. That four-year project resulted in a number of recommendations that were supported by both sides of the political aisle. What are the next steps for those recommendations and other ideas for tax reform that came out of the work of this group? We will discuss!
Amy Walen has represented the 48th legislative district (parts of Kirkland, Redmond, Bellevue and the "points" communities) since 2019. Amy is a small business person with over 20 years experience as an automotive dealership Chief Financial Officer. She served nine years on the Kirkland City Council, with four years as Mayor.
Amy cares deeply about the addressing the challenges faced by working families, and works on policies around housing affordability, preventing gun violence and suicide and tax reform.
See you then!

Our Interact Club at Redmond High School recently collected toiletries for the Essentials First charity based in Bellevue.
Essentials First hands out hygiene products to those in need, as cleanliness is a basic human dignity that no one should have to go without. Redmond Rotary Secretary and Interact liaison Jacquie May, collected the items to take to a kit- assembly project on the morning of November 5th organized by Woodinville Rotary Club. Several Interact students and several Redmond Rotarians have signed up for the event, which gives us a chance to work together.
The Interact Club also gave Jacquie May a box of completed and tested WAPIs to mail out, and the students worked on their schedule that will include talks from local and district Rotarians.
Jacquie surprised the students with cookies, which everyone enjoyed.

Redmond Rotary members and Redmond High School Interact Club members joined with Woodinville Rotary to assemble hygiene kits for Essential First on Saturday, November 5.
Essentials First empowers dignity daily and strengthens community-wide wellness by providing equitable access to vital personal and household hygiene products as well as food assistance.
Rotarians and Interacters prepared kits of helpful items like rain ponchos, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, wipes, etc., into small bags that can be distributed to those in need. Other members assembled blankets and cleaning products for needy residents.
It was a great project to bring Rotarians together with members of our Interact Club while meeting and working shoulder to shoulder with fellow Rotarians from Woodinville. We are grateful for Woodinville Rotary's invitation to join them.
Thanks Andy Pletz, Richard and Jacquie May, Hans Gundersen, Winston Lee, and Paula Del Giudice for sharing a portion of your Saturday to help!
